FWPD responds to officer battery investigation

Local News

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The Fort Wayne Police Department has issued a statement about an officer being investigated on battery claims.

It reads:

“At this time there is an investigation involving one of our officers underway. In an effort to have a transparent, unbiased and fair investigation the Fort Wayne Police Department did request the Indiana State Police conduct the investigation into the allegation. Currently, this investigation has been turned over by the Indiana State Police to the Allen County Prosecutors Office for charging consideration. Our internal investigation will commence after the Prosecutors Office makes its decision as to whether criminal charges are appropriate. We are not releasing the name of the officer at this time so as not to impede the judicial process.”

According to Indiana State Police Spokesman Sgt. Ron Galaviz, the incident happened in late March. An ISP investigator was assigned to the case in early April.

WANE 15 News has confirmed that the incident being investigated happened during a DUI arrest at the Allen County Jail.

Galaviz said the officer’s name would not be officially released until a decision on charges is made by the prosecutor’s office, which he says, has the case.

Because the investigation is ongoing, other details about incident have not been released.

The Allen County Prosecutor’s Office did not have comment for the ongoing investigation.

WANE 15 News continues to investigate the situation. This story will be updated.
