From Cuba to owning a downtown Fort Wayne restaurant. A documentary filmmaker thought it was quite a story.
A new documentary is showcasing the immigrant journey of Gustavo Rodriguez and his family.
Rodriguez and his wife Yalli Mesa own Caliente, a Cuban restaurant in downtown Fort Wayne.
A documentary to tell their story, titled “From Cuba to To Caliente” premiered tonight at the Atrium.
The family left Cuba after Rodriguez was blacklisted as a journalist by the cuban government.
First they traveled to Florida and then settled Fort Wayne.
The film’s director, Jack Cantey says it was important to share their immigration story and highlight their impact on the Summit City.
“I think it gives validation just to who they are as people and what they have created through their businesses here that they didn’t just create a restaurant, they really tried to create a community.”
The documentary was produced by local film company Italian Friend ArtRuckus.
Cantey says they hope to have the film available online by the end of April.
