He’s long been a friend and mentor. He’s been a partner with community projects. Now, he’s a murder suspect.

Cordell Hughes was arrested last week and is being charged with killing his mother. Hughes has been a friend and a mentor to Roderick Parker who is in shock over Hughes’ arrest.

“I’m really really having a hard time believing that this is even happening right now,” Parker said. “But even bigger than that. I just…I don’t know that Cordell at all.”

Court documents say Hughes’ mother, Carmen, died last week after she was stabbed 20 times. Parker said something else had to be at play if Hughes is guilty. He said Hughes spent time with Parker’s family when they were younger

“If this situation happened, I believe it was some type of mental lapse, mental breakdown or some type of demonic possession,” Parker said. “So if this situation happened then, what kept it from happening when he was around the people that I love and care about.”

Parker said he has not talked with Hughes since he was arrested, but he plans to visit Hughes in jail the next time he is in town.
