Fort Wayne man wins $4 million on Mega Millions ticket

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - - A Fort Wayne man who chose his own Mega Millions numbers won a $4 million prize.

The man, who has asked to remain anonymous, won on a ticket he purchased at Kroger at 1125 W. State Blvd. The ticket was for the Dec. 14, 2018 drawing, and the man came forward in January to claim the prize at Hoosier Lottery headquarters in Indianapolis.

Now retired, the man enjoys occasionally playing Hoosier Lottery games. When he plays Mega Millions, he puts numbered poker chips into a plastic popcorn container, shakes it up and pulls out five numbers. Then, he closes it, shakes again, and pulls out one more number for the Megaball. He takes those numbers to play on a Mega Millions ticket. That’s the process he followed to pick the numbers that won him $4 million.

After buying his Mega Millions ticket, the man called the Hoosier Lottery customer service line for the winning numbers after the drawing. When he heard so many of his numbers match, he excitedly waited to check the newspaper the next morning to double check that he’d won. Then, he called his son.

“He said, ‘Are you sure?’ I said, ‘You guys are going to be millionaires!’” the man recalled while claiming his prize.

After paying taxes and keeping some of the prize money, the man plans to give his adult children most of the winnings.

Adding Megaplier to his Mega Millions ticket paid off in a big way for the man. He matched 5 of 5 numbers and not the Megaball, which is normally a $1 million prize. However, because he chose to add Megaplier to the ticket, his prize was quadrupled.

Mega Millions Overall Odds are 1 in 24.
