New Year’s Eve will be extra special for Jacob Miller and Harley Mitchell. The couple is getting married and will celebrate during the ball drop at Parkview Field.
Jacob and Harley met while they were in the Navy in 2013.
Last year, Jacob popped the question during a Colts game. Their love has survived a lot, even a painful diagnosis.
“I was actually diagnosed in June 2014, he was actually deployed during that time so it was rough,” Harley said.
By looking at her, you’d never guess the 26-year-old could be battling multiple sclerosis. She was diagnosed when she was 22 and has since left the Navy.
“22. I was actually blind on my birthday,” Harley said.
Jacob has been at her side through it all. He even left the Navy to be at home with Harley and their son Parker. Harley gave him the choice to walk away, but he stayed.
“I wanted to show her that just because you got diagnosed doesn’t mean that it’s going to change anything for me,” Jacob said. “There will be hard days, but we’ll get through it and that’s basically what’s happened. I don’t feel brave for doing that I’m more proud of her for sticking through everything and waking up every day with the same mentality that she had before she was diagnosed.”
Plans for a June 2019 wedding were moved up to New Year’s Eve. Harley and Jacob said 2018 has been a very rough year due to her MS so they want to seize their moment now.
“I was hospitalized for about a week because it got so bad and it’s just been an ongoing battle all year and we kind of wanted to end the year on a happy note,” Harley said.
The couple’s wedding ceremony will be during the day at a pavilion on St. Mary’s Ave. They’ll celebrate at night at the Fort Wayne Ball Drop.
