Fort Wayne assesses river recreation safety after duck boat accident

Local News

After the Duck Boat tragedy in Missouri, Fort Wayne is assessing it’s river recreation safety.

There are five different private boat operating vendors overseen by the Parks and Recreation department.

For local boat operators like Mike Gasdorf, they say if it storms they close until the storm passes.

Dan Wire, the maintenance supervisor with Fort Wayne Parks and Rec, said that guidelines put in place for boat operation keep people safe while having fun.

Wire said he feels that our rivers and downtown are a big draw for fort wayne and the region.

Storms, lightening, windspeed and river height all play into the guidelines boat operators must follow.

In good weather,Gasdorf’s Airboat 1 takes off every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening throughout the summer, beginning around 6 o’clock at Don Hall’s Gas House.
