Fire crews douse flames, smoke at Metal X

Local News

WATERLOO, Ind. (WANE) – Firefighters were called to Metal X in Waterloo Saturday evening after a pile of scrap caught fire.

Firefighters were called to the business at 295 Commerce Street around 5 p.m.

Black smoke could be seen billowing from a pile of metal for several miles.

One witness told NewsChannel 15 flames were intially shooting 25 to 30 feet in the air.

Fire crews poured a lot of water on the pile as workers with heavy equipment pushed the pile around.

Crews have been called to the business before for a scrap pile fire, but this incident seemed to create a lot more smoke.

A 2013 fire in a scrap pile started near a shredder. The fire didn’t cause any damage, but several departments stayed on scene for approximately six hours, according to a WANE-TV report at the time.

Saturday’s fire attracted a crowd as several people pulled to the side of the road. Others reported seeing the smoke from several miles away.

No injuries were reported.

Metal X is a scrap metal recycling operation that started in 2012.

A message left for Metal X Saturday evening has not yet been returned.
