FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Fort Wayne Fire Capt. Eric Balliet was laid to rest Wednesday.

Hundreds attended a funeral service for Balliet at First Assembly of God located at 1400 West Washington Center Road, ahead of a burial ceremony at Huntertown Cemetery at the corner of West Cedar Canyons Road and Dunton Road.

During the ceremony Balliet’s wife and two children were presented with a letter from the governor, a medallion of service from the State Fire Marshall and a medal for a line of duty death.

Balliet was a captain on the fire department and would have been promoted to Battalion Chief in February. Today Fire Chief Eric Lahey awarded him the new rank saying, “We knew him as a captain, but let’s remember him as a chief.”

Balliet passed away on duty Wednesday night while training in Fort Wayne. He was 41.

Balliet was a 19-year veteran of the fire department. He also served as a reserve Allen County Sheriff’s officer and a deputy coroner for the county. He was also active with area burn survivors, and a parishioner at Pathway Community Church.

Balliet is survived by his wife, Alicia, and their twin children, Lucas and Alyssa.
