The former top executive of Lutheran Heath Network who was fired in the wake of an unsuccessful buyout attempt has been picked to lead IU Health’s Fort Wayne services.

Brian Bauer has been named president of IU Health Fort Wayne, the group announced Thursday. Bauer had been serving IU Health in a consulting role since it began servicing Fort Wayne in 2017.

“Brian is a natural fit to lead IU Health in Fort Wayne,” said Ron Stiver, president of IU Health’s System Clinical Services, ”He has a great deal of experience in healthcare leadership, and is deeply committed to ensuring the residents of Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana have access to high quality, personalized care.”

Bauer was fired as CEO of Lutheran Health Network and Lutheran Hospital in June 2017. The move came three weeks after the parent company of Lutheran Health Network – Community Health Systems – rejected a $2.4 billion offer submitted by a group of 10 local doctors to buy the hospital system.

Months later, Community Health Systems sued Bauer, alleging he breached his contract with the health network by spreading disparaging, confidential and proprietary information about CHS’s affiliates to competitors under a pseudonym online. The sides settled the lawsuit last year.

Bauer served as CEO of Terre Haute Regional Hospital before taking the same role at Lutheran Health. He’s served on the boards of several statewide and local groups including the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, Mad Anthony’s, Indiana Hospital Association, Greater Fort Wayne, Inc., the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership and the Northeast Indiana Regional Chamber of Commerce, and was a 2013 recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash award.

Bauer assumed the duties of president for IU Health Fort Wayne on Jan. 1.

“Anyone who knows Brian knows he is committed to healthcare and his community,” said Ryan Kitchell, executive vice president and chief administrative officer for IU Health, who serves as chairman of the IU Health Fort Wayne Board of Directors. “I am confident that he is the right person to lead our organization in Fort Wayne as our services grow and expand this year and going forward.”
