It’s a special designation for the care of seniors and Dupont Hospital is now the only facility in the state that has it.
The ER at Dupont Hospital is now accredited as a Geriatric Emergency Department. The designation means the hospital is one of the top facilities in the country to specialize care for senior patients.
The Geriatric Accreditation Program was launched earlier this year. Departments have to meet criteria of more than a dozen best practices for geriatric care to achieve the designation. Dupont received a Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation. A Level 3 department must incorporate several of the best practices, must provide geriatric education, and have equipment and supplies appropriate for geriatric care.
Hospital leaders say this designation is another step forward for Dupont to enhance care for seniors.
“All ages have specific care needs, from birth up to the geriatric population,” said Kim Fulkerson, Chief Nursing Officer at Dupont. “We can’t treat them all the same so we have a focus on their age group, on how we care for them. So providing just that optimal safest care for their population, highest quality and efficiency.”
Dupont is one of just 14 hospitals nationwide to have the designation.
