A pile of titanium shavings caught fire at OmniSource on Taylor Street in Fort Wayne Friday afternoon and due to the nature of the fire it couldn’t be put out with water.

Crews were called to the fire at around 2 p.m. at the facility located at 2711 Taylor Street.

Officials say the fire began in with a bin carrying metal shavings and the roll of the truck that was hauling them. Firefighters could not use water on the fire because the shavings were titanium. Instead they had to use dry sand.

The fire did start to spread to the inside of the building and was quickly extinguished.

The 20 people in the building were evacuated. Firefighters located the driver of the truck and made sure he was safe. No one was injured.

Once the sand arrived, fire crews used it to cover the fire. A fire watch was set up while the fire burned out. The fire was under control around 5:00 Friday evening.
