Council rejects elimination of business personal property tax

Local News

The business personal property tax will continue on in Fort Wayne.

City Council Tuesday night voted down 6-3 a plan to eliminate the tax, which businesses pay based on their assets. Revenue is sent to places like schools, the airport and library system.

The tax was regularly lessened by council through long-term tax abatements for businesses through agreed-upon performance, workforce goals or development benchmarks.

Councilman Jason Arp, R-4th, sponsored the measure to eliminate the tax, arguing it forced government to “micromanage people’s businesses.” Councilman Paul Ensley, R-1st, co-sponsored the plan.

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry said previously the city could not absorb the kind of hit it would take if the tax was eliminated. He estimated the city would lose $55 million per year in income.
