A worker at the Steel Dynamics plant in Whitley County has died in a workplace accident.
First responders were called just before 1 p.m. Friday to the Steel Dynamics mill at 2800 South 800 East, at the Whitley-Allen county line, on a reported injury. Whitley County Coroner Randy Dellinger said Monday that medics tried to treat and resusitate the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dellinger said 55-year-old Kevin Sieber died as a result of crush injuries and his death was ruled accidental.
The coroner added that “circumstances that led to the death are still being investigated.“
WANE 15 News worked throughout the weekend to confirm the death but multiple agences would not provide information on the incident.
On Monday, the company’s President and CEO Mark Millett told WANE 15 News that he was “more than saddened to confirm the death.“
He said the line Sieber was working on was shut down as the investigation continued. It’s a brand-new line put into operation within the past month or two.
Millett added that the incident is devastating to Sieber’s wife and two daughters and gave his sympathies to them.
“Our first focus is on the famiy and employees that worked with him,“ he said.
Sieber’s wife told WANE 15 News he was a loving father, husband and servant to all.
“He went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,“ she added.
OSHA has investigated several deaths at Steel Dynamics facilities over the years. Including a 44-year-old man killed by being caught in a piece of equipment in 2013 at the Columbia City plant. A 27-year-old fell to his death while cleaning the roof of an SDI building in Butler in 2011. A 41-year-old was killed by a fallen beam in Columbia City in 2006. A woker for a construction company was killed by a falling beam at the Whitley County SDI site in 2001.
