FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A Waynedale church and cemetery are being considered for historic designation by the Fort Wayne City Council.
The Prarie Grove Chapel and Cemetery, located off of Old Trail Road, date back to the 1800s. On Tuesday, an ordinance was introduced to give the church a historic designation.
The status would ensure the space be preserved and would limit the types of renovations that could be done.
"It shows that people want to preserve something that is old, that is beautiful, and that has historical value to it," said 5th District Councilman Geoff Paddock. "It is good to see those things coming forward because often times an old building will go by the way of the wrecking ball."
Fort Wayne City Council voted to pass the ordinance out of committee. They will take a regular session vote next week.
