Fire broke out in an apartment building in the Canterbury Green complex mid-afternoon Tuesday.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called around 3:30 p.m. to a building in the 2500 block of Abbey Drive. A video sent to WANE 15 shows heavy flames shooting from a second-floor apartment window.

Officials said one child was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation. According to dispatch the child was listed in serious condition.

Three people had to be rescued from a second-floor balcony, according to a battalion chief.

Six fire engines could be seen at the scene. Firefighers were able to get the fire under control around 4:40 p.m

The fire broke out in the second floor of the building but it’s not clear how the fire started. It’s not known how many residents will be displaced. The battalion chief said eight apartments were condemned as a result of the fire.
