Charges filed in fatal crash on Cuba Road

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A New Haven man faces charges of vehicular homicide and causing death while operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in connection with a fiery Cuba Road crash late last month that killed his girlfriend.

The crash took place just north of State Road 37 in northeast Allen County at around 10 p.m. on June 29.

The driver, Jeremy J. Hoerger, 29, was driving an SUV when he missed a curve and slammed into a tree.

When emergency crews arrived, the SUV was engulfed in flames.

His passenger, Juliet Anne Taylor Schnebelt, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the probable cause affidavit, a driver in another vehicle told police that she was traveling north on Cuba Road when she saw the SUV's headlights coming toward her at a high rate of speed so she applied the brakes to avoid hitting it.  That witness and a passenger were able to help pull Hoerger from the SUV, but they were unable to rescue Schnebelt.

Hoerger was hospitalized for his injuries and a blood test showed he had a BAC of .27%.

On Monday charges were officially filed against Hoerger in Allen Superior Court.
