Car crashes into house during police chase

Local News

Another car crashed into a building on State Boulevard early Thursday morning. This time it was a home that took the hit.

Police would not provide any details about the crash, but Fort Wayne emergency dispatchers said it happened following a police chase.

That chase started around midnight near Coliseum Boulevard and Goshen Road.

It’s not clear what happened next, but the chase ended a short time later at 625 W. State Blvd. That’s right where Goshen Avenue meets State.

The car that officers were chasing appeared to have jumped the curb and crashed into the front of the two-story home.

The driver was taken to a hospital in good condition.

The homeowners told WANE 15 that everyone inside their home was shaken up, but okay. They said they were sleeping when they heard a loud crash and felt their home shake.

“[My wife] jumped up first, looked out the window, and said, ‘I think a car just hit the house,'” Aaron Mendenhall said.

“I was literally shaking when I woke up because I didn’t know what happened,” Aaron’s wife Desiree said.

The house did not sustain serious damage, but the collision destroyed the front porch and knocked the front door frame loose.

The Mendenhalls said they’re thankful that everyone is okay, but the experience was still traumatic for them and their two children.

“We finally got them to go back to sleep in the same room, that way they were close enough to eachother they could hopefully get some comfort,” Desiree said.

“It was pretty startling,” Aaron added.

It’s not clear if any charges have or will be filed as a result of the situation, or if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The incident is under investigation.

This crash happened less than 24 hours after a different car crashed into Klemm’s Candlelite Cafe. That’s less than a 1.5 miles away on E. State Boulevard.
