Body found inside downtown construction area

Local News

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A worker at a downtown construction site discovered a man’s body near the base of a construction crane Friday morning, according to Fort Wayne police.

The discovery was made around 4:30 a.m. at the Skyline Tower site on Webster Street between Wayne and Berry.

Officers arrived and found a man surrounded by a pool of blood and suffering from significant injuries, according to FWPD Spokesman Officer Mark Bieker.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead.

Investigators have yet to determine how the man died – if he fell from the crane, or if foul play was a factor.

The Allen County Coroner is investigating and is expected to release the identity of the man as well as an exact cause and manner of death.

The area where the body was discovered was inside a working area surrounded by a six-foot tall chain-link fence. Police said the gates on the fence are closed at night by a chain and padlock. It’s unclear how the man got into the construction area.

A law enforcement source told NewsChannel 15 Overnight Reporter Rod Hissong the First Presbyterian Church next to the construction site has a motion activated camera pointed towards the area of where the body was found. But it’s not known whether the camera captured the incident.

It’s also not known when the man died.

Detectives on scene attempted to gather potential witness statements and other information about what happened. Crime scene technicians also photographed and collected possible evidence in an effort to gather clues about how the man died.

Fort Wayne police are asking anyone who might know what happened to call the department or Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-STOP.

The incident is under investigation.

Larry Weigand, the CEO of Weigand Construction, released the following statement Friday afternoon:

First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the deceased. We have no comments, other than to confirm that this was a non-construction fatality (no connection to the construction project) and that the construction site was fully locked and secure at all times throughout the night. The deceased climbed 2 security fences to gain access to the site. We are respectfully declining to comment further due to this being an ongoing investigation by the Ft. Wayne police department. Instead, please direct any and all inquiries to the Fort Wayne Police Department at this time. Thank you.
