Body found in St. Marys River

Local News

A body was found in the St. Marys River in downtown Fort Wayne mid-afternoon Friday.

Around 1:30 p.m., passengers on the Sweet Breeze river boat spotted a body in water just north of the Three Rivers Apartments building, near the intersection of Superior Street and Spy Run Avenue, according to Fort Wayne Fire Department spokesman Adam O’Connor.

Fort Wayne Police Officer Michael Joyner says the crew was from the Parks and Recreation department.

The fire department deployed a boat and divers into the river. The body of a man was found in a log jam, inside a tent, says Officer Joyner.

Authorities gathered off Guldlin Park to recover the body from the water.

The victim was identified later as 39-year-old Joshua Lee Huguley of Fort Wayne. The cause and manner of Huguley’s death is pending further investigation and testing, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said.

The Department of Natural Resources is heading the investigation with assistance from the Fort Wayne Police Department.

“Not knowing where it’s going to go, we have our homicide detective here, we have our crime scene technicians here, and we’re documenting…  We’ve got all the necessary resources here, to ensure we’re protecting all the evidence, and we’re able to move forward in any direction that we have to go with the investigation,” says Officer Joyner.
