Bluffton Mayor Ted Ellis will not seek a seventh term, citing age and health reasons.
In an email Monday, Ellis said he would retire after his current term expires Jan. 1, 2020. Ellis has Parkinson’s disease.
“Six years ago, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease,” Ellis said in the email. “While I am generally healthy, we know that the disease will progress and I plan to make the most of my retirement years.”
The 71-year-old Ellis was elected in 1995. He has been unopposed in each election since and is now one of the state’s longest-serving mayors.
