An Albion man charged with murder and child molesting in the death of a 2-year-old he had been babysitting has pleaded guilty.
Through a plea agreement, Trevor L. Wert, 42, pleaded guilty to a charge of murder related to the Nov. 1 death of 2-year-old Railee Ewing in a case Noble County Prosecutor Eric Blackman called one of the most brutal abuse cases ever in the county. According to the Kendallville News-Sun, the Level 1 felony charge of child molesting was dropped as part of the agreement.
Young Railee was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital around 7:20 a.m. Nov. 1 unresponsive. Doctors said the toddler had signs of possible abuse, including “significant” bruising.
An autopsy found Railee died of multiple blunt force traumatic injuries. There were also injuries to her private areas consistent with penetration by an object, Blackman said at the time.
According to Blackman, Wert had been babysitting the child on the night of Oct. 31 – when authorities believe the injuries happened.
During an interview with police, Wert reportedly admitted to beating young Railee because he was angry with her, Blackman said.
According to The (Kendallville) News-Sun, the plea deal calls for Wert to serve 45-65 years in prison, though a judge must still approve the deal. He will be sentenced Dec. 31.
