FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A popular Fort Wayne pool is struggling and its board members say it is dangerously close to closing.
The Avalon Summer Sports Club has been part of the Waynedale community for over 50 years. The pool, located at 8021 Durban Drive, has a recreational pool, hosts social activities, and has a swim team.
According to the pool's Board of Directors President Justin Arkkelin, the facility has seen a decline in membership and, with the pool's age, a rise in cost to maintain it.
"The pool is old. It is one of the oldest pools in town...there are small things like being able to fix carpeting, and concrete that is kind of crumbling to bigger things like the pool is leaking." said Arkkelin.
To try and attract members, the pool has discounted membership costs from $375 to only $75. They have also partnered with local businesses to put on fundraisers to keep the pool.
If the pool does close, its competition swim and dive team would have to relocate.
Long time member, and former swim coach Beth Dafforn said she spent many days at the Avalon Pool growing up and that losing it would be sad for the community.
"Its such a wonderful place, it has such great memories. It was great for families and to have your children here...it has been such a part of this Waynedale area and community," said Dafforn.
A GoFundMe* page was also created to try and save the pool. The fund's goal is to raise $50,000.
"Avalon pool is amazing and it's got great history, lots and lots of memories for generations of families here in the Waynedale area and not just for people in this area, but all over town. We want to see this place stay open for many years to come." said Akkelin.
