A Decatur barn was completely destroyed in an early morning fire.
Fire crews were called just after 6 a.m. Wednesday to a property at 10161 C.R. 100 East, north of Decatur. There, firefighters found a large barn full involved with fire.
By daylight, firefighters had the blaze under control. Crews were using an excavator to move debris as firefighters doused whatever was still smoldering.
The barn – a 100-feet by 50-feet structure – was considered a total loss.
No injuries were reported, though two large market steers and two smaller calves perished in fire, Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckle said. Some $15,000 worth of farm machinery in the barn, along with straw and hay, was destroyed, Marckle added.
It’s not clear how the fire began. A cause has not yet been determined.
Hoagland, Monroeville, Poe, Preble and Decatur fire departments, as well as Adams County EMS, all responded to the call.
