Fire officials are investigating after an early morning house fire left two children in critical condition.
Just before 6 Thursday morning, fire crews responded to the 4400 block of Smith Street.
“My cousin stays here and she has kids,” said Jonathan Hinton. “I am so worried, stressed out, tripping over this.”
When fire crews arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the back of the house.
Ten people were inside the home when the fire started, including eight children. Six were able to escape on their own. Firefighters rescued four other children.
All four children were taken to the hospital. Two were in good condition. Two were listed in critical condition. Their exact ages were not immediately clear.
“The youngest one with all the burns, he was in shock,” said neighbor Shirley Meck. “I know the two year old was in shock, because he wasn’t crying. I mean he was burned real bad.”
Fire crews were on scene three minutes after the call came out. They had the blaze under control in about thirty minutes.
The home sustained heavy smoke, fire, and water damage. It has been condemned.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
