3-alarm fire damages Stellhorn Rd. businesses

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – At least four businesses were damaged after fire ripped through a business complex Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to 3460 Stellhorn Road around 4:45 a.m.

The first arriving crews found smoke and flames towering from the roof of a large office building.

Additional alarms were called within minutes.

By 5:15 a.m. most of the fire had been extinguished.

The most extensive damage is to the Dr. James Murdock Chiropractor office. Murdock was one of the first tenants in the building.

“Thirty-two years of work being in the same office is a long time, so my first thoughts were how are we going get the office back open, which we will,” Murdock said.

Murdock said he heard about the fire when a friend called early Wednesday morning.

“Someone here from the news agencies had put it on the news and I got a phone call from a friend, saying that your office burned down,” Murdock said.

Luckily, he was able to save important documents from inside the office.

“We were able to get all the most important things out that were necessary and secured, so all of our records are secured so nobody needs to worry about that, which we are very glad that the fire people were wonderful in helping us attain that,” Murdock said.

It’s the end of one chapter, but Murdock said it’s the beginning of a new one as well.

“We’ve been told that things don’t happen to you they happen for you, so this is going to be a good opportunity to actually start new and we will,” Murdock. “We’ll be back.”

At least three other businesses were damaged: RGIS Inventory Specialist, Insure Smart Fire Insurance, and Innovative Professional Services.

The roof of the chiropractor office collapsed and part of a wall fell inside the building. Firefighters attacked the flames from the outside.

Due to the intensity of the flames and safety concerns firefighters were not able to go inside.

FWPD officials said no one was inside then building when the fire broke out.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause is under investigation.
