STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – Two men were hurt in a head-on crash on the Indiana Toll Road Thursday, according to Indiana State Police.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes approximately four miles west of the exit for Angola.

State police said around 3:30 p.m. a car driven by Jeffrey Stroike, 32, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, was heading west and crossed the center median. The vehicle collided head-on with a semi traveling the opposite direction driven by William Aponte, 44, Bronx, New York.

Police don’t know why Stroike went across the median.

Investigators said Stroike was thrown from the vehicle. He was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Aponte was trapped in the semi and was eventually extricated by emergency workers. He was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in serious condition and is expected to survive.

State police said the westbound lanes of the toll road were closed for approximately 30 minutes. The eastbound lanes were closed until around 6:30 p.m while police investigated.
