The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a double fatal crash near Antwerp Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. on State Road 49 near County Road 214, about two miles north of Antwerp.

According to investigators, a vehicle driven by Zachery S. Burns, 27, Antwerp, was southbound on State Road 49 when he struck the rear-end of an SUV. The impact forced the SUV over the center line which then collided with a vehicle going the opposite direction. That vehicle was driven by Kurtis Ellert, 40, Hamilton.

Burns’ vehicle went off the road and then came back across the road and struck another vehicle going north. The driver of the fourth vehicle was Josh Gerken, 33, Edon.

Two people in the SUV were pronounced dead. Their names have not been released. State police said both victims were not wearing seatbelts.

Burns, the driver of the first vehicle, was taken to a hospital in Paulding with non-life threatening injuries. Ellert and two passengers in his vehicle were all taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Gerken was also taken to a hospital in Paulding.

State police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, but details about who might have been under the influence were not released. It’s unclear if any charges have been filed.

The crash closed State Road 49 for several hours.

The crash is under investigation.
