Motorcyclist in crash near downtown dies from injuries

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A motorcyclist has died after he was critically hurt in a crash involving three other vehicles near downtown Fort Wayne.

It happened just before 11 p.m. Friday near Broadway and Lavina Street. That's just a few blocks from the old General Electric campus.

Police said Kevin Ackerman, 51 of Ligonier, and woman were on a motorcycle heading south on Broadway when they crossed the center line and ran into three separate vehicles heading the other direction. They then slid on the road for several feet before coming to a stop on the ground.

Medics took both people to a hospital in critical condition. Police said neither of the victims were wearing a helmet.

The Allen County Coroner's Office released information on Ackerman's death on Tuesday. It's unclear when he died.

The woman's name hasn't been released. None of the other people involved in the crash were hurt.

It's not clear what factors may have led the motorcycle to cross the middle divider line.

Broadway was closed at Lavina Street for more than two hours while police investigated the crash.
