News

TOLEDO, Ohio (WANE) – Fort Wayne’s season came to an end Wednesday night as the Komets fell 5-2 to Toledo in game seven of the North Division Finals.

The first period couldn’t have been much worse for the Komets. Tyler Barnes netted a power play goal 8:44 into the first frame to stake Toledo to a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later Kyle Bonis scored his sixth goal of the playoffs, making it 2-0. The Walleye weren’t done, however, as Justin Mercier’s goal at 17:34 gave Toledo a 3-0 advantage heading in the second period.

Toledo wasted little time in the second frame, with Barnes netting his second goal of the night just 16 seconds into the period. Garrett Meurs would get the Komets on the board at 16:11 to cut the Walleye lead to 4-1 with his third goal of the playoffs. A Matthew Pistilli goal (his sixth of the postseason) with 10 seconds remaining in the second would make 4-2 heading into the third.

The Komets could not cut into the lead in the third period and pulled Nagle with 3:11 to go. Less than a minute later Toledo’s Shane Berschbach tallied an empty-netter, increasing Toledo’s lead to 5-2.

Nagle saved 18-of-22 shots in goal for the Komets.

Jeff Lerg stopped 27-of-29 shots for Toledo.

Toledo advances to face South Carolina in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference Finals.
