BUTLER, Ind. (WANE) – A massive fire broke out at a historic building in Butler Thursday evening.

Firefighters were called to the Butler Company building around 6:45 p.m. on South Broadway and East Willow Street. Additional departments were called to assist.

Towering flames and billowing smoke could be seen for miles around DeKalb County Thursday.

County dispatchers said no injuries were reported. The building was vacant and no one was believed to be inside at the time of the fire. Photos submitted to NewsChannel 15’s Report It feature show several walls and the roof partially collapsed.

Additional information has not been released.

Historical records say the company was first built in the 1890s but suffered a fire 1958. The building was later rebuilt and in the 1990s the company dealt with plumbing supplies and electrical goods. It’s unknown when the building was occupied last.

No word on what may have caused the fire.

As of 10:30 p.m., fire department personnel were still on the scene extinguishing hot spots.
