An eastern Indiana fire chief says two people have died and seven people have been injured in a fire at an apartment building.

Richmond Fire Chief Jerry Purcell tells the Palladium-Item five residents of the Interfaith Apartments were being treated at a Richmond hospital following the Monday evening fire, and two firefighters were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The newspaper reports flames were shooting out of a fifth-story window, and a fifth-floor hallway had heavy smoke. Firefighters carried some people from the building.

The newspaper reports the building’s fifth and sixth floors were cleared of residents, and others from lower floors also were evacuated from the building.

Firefighters had the fire knocked down after about 70 minutes.
