Deputies had to use a taser on a man after an altercation with a LaGrange law enforcement officer at the jail.

The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office says it attempted a traffic stop around 8:30 Sunday night along County Road 1150 E near Big Turkey Lake. That’s when they say the 2002 Ford Focus driven by 50-year-old Steven Ritchie of Stroh, Indiana took off.

The vehicle turned onto County Road 350 S and drove through the front yard of 3470 S 1145 E before coming to a stop in the driveway. Deputies say Ritchie was agitated when he got out of the vehicle. He was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle without Ever Receiving a License and taken to the LaGrange County jail.

While at the jail, deputies say they found bags of suspected marijuana and methamphetamine on Ritchie. They say he again became agitated and a physical confrontation began. Deputies say they had to use a taser to subdue Ritchie. A jail officer was treated and released from the Parkview LaGrange Hospital. Ritchie refused medical treatment. He’s being preliminarily charged with Resisting with a Motor Vehicle, and Battery to Law Enforcement.
