A southern Indiana police chief says a man has been killed in an officer-involved shooting. It happened in the the 100 block of South Bohannon Lane just after 1 p.m.

New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey says two officers went to a home to conduct a welfare check on a man, who opened fire on them. Bailey says the officers retreated to safe cover, and when the man emerged from the home and opened fire again, one officer shot and subdued him.

Bailey says the man, later identified as Benjamin Lucas, 36, was taken to University of Louisville Hospital in nearby Louisville, Kentucky. He was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

No police officers were injured.

Per policy, the shooting is being jointly investigated by the New Albany Police Department and Indiana State Police.

The name of the officer involved has not been released.
