Indianapolis police say a member of their violent crimes unit has shot and wounded a suspect wanted in connection with shooting a security guard at a liquor store.

Deputy Chief Chris Bailey says the unit tracked the suspect to a video store on the city’s west side Friday afternoon and attempted to apprehend him, blocking the suspect’s car from leaving the parking lot.

Bailey says the suspect left his vehicle and began to flee, then turned around in an apparent attempt to grab a handgun from the vehicle. That’s when an officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

Bailey says the suspect has been hospitalized in serious condition. The names of the suspect and the officer haven’t been released.

He says officers found a handgun on the vehicle’s center console.
