A Virginia man died after the truck he was driving crossed the median on the Indiana Toll Road in Steuben County on Thursday morning and collided with a semi according to Indiana State Police.
A preliminary investigation determined that Shawn L. Alston, 44, of Chesterfield, Virginia was driving a box truck in the westbound lanes near Fremont at around 11:40 a.m. when for an unknown reason he drove through the center median and into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes.
Alston’s truck collided with a semi driven by Derwin W. Patton, 54, of Lagrange. A second semi than collided with Patton’s rig.
Alston was pronounced dead at the scene while Patton was taken to a hospital and was expected to be treated and released.
The driver of the second semi was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation and Indiana State Police were assisted by the Fremont Fire Department, the Indiana Toll Road Commission, Indiana Conservation Officers, Steuben County EMA, Steuben County EMS and the Steuben County Coroner.
