Two friends were walking on the Michigan City Lighthouse breakwall Fridah evening when crashing waves estimated to be 10 to 15 feet high knocked them into the water according to Indiana Conservation Officers.

One man was able to swim back to the breakwall and tried to throw a life ring out to rescue his friend, however he never came back to the surface.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued him and took him to a Michigan City hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased man has been identified as Slater Harkleroad, 20, of Union Mills.

John Hammons, 22, of LaPorte was treated at a hospital and released.
