LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana couple allegedly abandoned their adopted daughter in a rented apartment and moved to Canada, leaving her to fend for herself.

Forty-five-year-old Kristine Elizabeth Barnett and 43-year-old Michael Barnett are charged with two counts of neglect.

According to court documents, they adopted the then 8-year-old girl in 2010, two years after she moved to the U.S. from Ukraine through an adoption program.

The Journal & Courier reports that in July 2013 the couple rented a Lafayette, Indiana, apartment for the then-11-year-old girl, who has dwarfism.

Court documents say they then legally changed her age to 22, told her to tell anyone asking that she was 22, and moved to Canada.

Online court records don’t list attorneys who could speak on behalf of the couple, who now live in Indianapolis.
