Indiana lawmaker wants revenge porn victims to be able to sue for damages

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A state lawmaker wants to make it easier for revenge porn victims to sue the person who posts their intimate images.

State Sen. Mike Bohacek, a Republican from Michiana Shores, said revenge porn happens across the state.

“Some people just can’t control themselves and feel the desire to be vindictive and begin to circulate those images in an attempt to harm the other person, either financially or via their reputation,” Bohacek said.

That’s why Bohacek created a bill that would allow victims to sue for damages up to $10,000.
The Senate Judiciary Committee, which Bohacek sits on, heard his bill Wednesday.

“In my opinion, you have a reasonable expectation of privacy when you allow someone to take images of this type of you,” Bohacek said. “When they violate that expectation of privacy and trust, then, yes, you would have a civil case, in my opinion.”

Cyber Civil Rights.org  said 41 states have laws against revenge porn.

However, Bohacek said, work still needs to be done on the bill and there wasn’t a vote Wednesday.

Bohacek said lawmakers will come back on Monday to talk more about the bill
