FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A armed group of the veterans group Oath Keepers stood watch outside the city’s Armed Forces Career Center recruiting station on Tuesday, an act that has become a regular sight at such facilities in the wake of last week’s Chattanooga mass shooting.
At least six Oath Keepers stood in front of the recruiting station at 4122 Lima Road in the Glenbrook Commons shopping center, armed with pistols. The Oath Keepers are current and former military, police and first responders dedicated to protecting the Constitution against threats, according to their website.
The threat was heightened Thursday when Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez opened fire on two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee, killing four Marines and a naval officer from Paulding, Ohio, and wounding a Marine recruiter and a Chattanooga police officer.
The Oath Keepers stood watch Tuesday outside the city’s recruitment office in relief of a veteran who had been self-stationed there since Thursday.
The group told Newschannel 15 they stay until the threat level goes down.
Members of Oath Keepers have stood watch outside military recruitment offices nationwide since the incident. The group’s website includes clips of several of the acts.
