Son arrested after man, woman found badly hurt inside home

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A couple are recovering this morning after they were found hurt – one critically – inside a southwest Fort Wayne home mid-afternoon Wednesday. Police took a suspect – their son – into custody a county away.

Fort Wayne police and fire officials investigate at a home at 3309 Homestead Road on Wednesday, July 5, 2017.

Fort Wayne police responded around 3 p.m. to a home at 3309 Homestead Road, between Covington and Aboite Center roads, after a call to 911 was cut off. At the home, police spokesman Michael Joyner said officers found a female and a male injured.

Joyner said 71-year-old Sandra S. Ruse was hospitalized in stable condition and her husband, 75-year-old Gene L. Ruse, is in critical condition. Both were the victims of a battery, he said.

Joyner said during the investigation, police learned that a Chevrolet Equinox was missing from the home, and officers began tracking it.

The couple’s 50-year-old son, Scott Ruse, led officers on a brief vehicle pursuit before OnStar was able to disable the vehicle and stop it in Whitley County on State Road 9 at 400 N. He was arrested on two counts of attempted murder and two counts of attempted robbery.

Ruse was taken back to Fort Wayne where he was undergoing interviews with detectives.

According to Michael Durnell, who lives across the street, the Ruse family has lived in that home for more than 30 years. He said the couple own Brookwood Cabinet Company. He said Scott Ruse is their only son.

Several Fort Wayne Police squad cars, along with a Fort Wayne fire engine, were parked at the home during the investigation. At least three remained early Thursday. Police tape could be seen around the single-story home, which is set back off the road on well-manicured property.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor’s office.
