Shooter sentenced for killing man, 55

Derek R Ford

A Fort Wayne man who fatally shot a man as he stood on a porch has been sentenced.

Derek R. Ford was sentenced Friday morning in in Allen Superior Court to 17 1/2 years for voluntary manslaughter. Ford was one of four people charged in the Sept. 20, 2016, shooting death of 55-year-old Robert J. Moore on the front porch of a home at 4131 Avondale Drive.

It was around 10:50 p.m. that night that Fort Wayne police heard gunshots in the area. At 10:57 p.m. police received a 911 call that someone had been shot at the home.

A police spokesman said then that the first arriving officers found a man on the front porch who had been shot. They rendered first aid, but paramedics arrived and pronounced the man deceased.

Detectives attempted to speak with potential witnesses as crime scene technicians processed possible evidence. A K-9 officer was also called to the scene, but was not able to track any potential suspects.

Four people were eventually charged in the case, which appeared to be a group shooting at another group. Moore was not the intended target, police have said.
