DNA evidence leads to arrest in trailer theft case

A law which took effect in January which requires a DNA sample be taken from anyone arrested for a felony is being credited with solving a theft investigation in Jay County.

According to Indiana State Police, back in January a trailer belonging to Loy Auctioneering and Real Estate was stolen from the Jay County Fairgrounds.

Later that month the trailer was found in a church parking lot. An Indiana State Police crime scene investigator examined the trailer for fingerprints and DNA evidence which was sent to a lab for analysis.

In July a DNA profile was entered into the Combined DNA Index System.

A week later, investigator learned of a possible DNA match involving a Redkey, Indiana man who coincidentally been arrested in April for an unrelated trailer theft.  As a result of that arrest, Thomas L. Wright had to provide a DNA sample which ended up providing a match to DNA found on the trailer stolen in January.

Wright was arrested for felony theft.
