Arrest made in deadly shooting at Texas Roadhouse

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) An arrest has been made in a shooting at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant on Washington Center Road late Sunday that left one person dead and another critically hurt.

Andrew Cassaday

Andrew Cassaday, 29, was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated battery and possession of a firearm, hours after a double shooting at the popular steakhouse around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The aggravated battery charge was soon changed to murder Monday. Jeffrey M. Lute, 28, of Fort Wayne was killed in the altercation.

Police were called to the restaurant 710 W. Washington Center Road on a report of a shooting there.

“We were kind of attacked as soon as we walked out to our car,” a source told NewsChannel 15.

Someone with Lute said some of the men were part of the Steel Horse Rebels bike gang. According to a friend, Lute was apart of the group at one point, but not when it was a gang. The friend told us that he and Lute broke ties with the group after it changed from a charitable organization to a gang.

Outside of the restaurant a physical altercation started between the men. Sources said Lute eventually pulled out his gun after repeatedly asking the men to leave. Lute then shot a man in the leg and took off running around the restaurant.

“To kind of defend himself and get away from the incident and unfortunately it cost him his life,” the source told said.

That’s when police and the friend said Cassaday shot and killed Lute.

“I saw what happened,” the source said. “I ran over to him. I saw everything how he was. It’s tough.”

A source told NewsChannel 15 that members of the gang had been targeting Lute for at least eight months.

“Life will go on and he’s looking down on all of us now as our guardian angel,” the source said.

The first victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Cassaday has faced several criminal cases in Allen County, including drug possession, false informing and dealing marijuana, according to court records. Corrections records show he served a year for marijuana possession in 2009.

The Texas Roadhouse shooting happened just minutes before another shooting down the road in the 1900 block of River Run Trail, in the Woodbridge Apartments complex.

Anyone with additional information for either shooting is asked to call the Fort Wayne Police Department at (260) 427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-7867.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office said Lute died of a gunshot wound and ruled his death the county’s 23rd homicide of the year.
