FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) As 3Rivers Federal Credit Union closed for Presidents Day, many of its employees decided to spend their day off volunteering throughout the northeast Indiana region.
More than 180 team members volunteered at 19 nonprofits Monday, the credit union’s Melissa Shaw said. With 17 branches throughout the region, employees were able to spread out to help the different organizations.
“Community service is so, so important to the credit union. Who we are at our core is serving the community and giving back to those who have given us so much. We live in an awesome community with so many wonderful nonprofits and we are very, very happy to spend our Presidents Day serving the needs of others,” Shaw said.
About a dozen of the volunteers were at East Wayne Street Center, which provides educational programs for parents with children.
“They are doing some wonderful work for us today. They are cleaning our carpets. They are doing some dry wall work, cleaning nooks and crannies of offices that don’t normally get it so we’re very, very appreciative this worked out and for them to support us,” said East Wayne Street Center’s Adult Education Coordinator Monique Johnson.
The organization received a grant from the 3Rivers Credit Union Foundation last year. It helps students who never got their high school diploma by funding free transportation, child care, classes and students get a voucher for testing.
“It allows us to remove the barriers from our students’ lives, the things that are holding them back form going back and furthering their education,” Johnson explained. “We depend a lot on our community partners, as do most nonprofits in the area. It’s just a huge piece of what we do. We couldn’t do it without them.Employees volunteered at other locations, including:
