Whitko baseball coach Mark Fisher passes away

The northeast Indiana baseball community is mourning the loss of Whitko High School head coach Mark Fisher after the well-known coach passed away on Monday.

Fisher, a 2001 Huntington North graduate, was entering his second season as the head baseball coach at Whitko.

He had served the previous four seasons as an assistant under then-coach Erik Hisner.

Fisher was involved not only in coaching high school baseball but in various summer leagues as well, including the Summit City Sluggers.

Fisher’s former colleagues remember him as a friend more than anything.

“He was a great friend,” said Hisner. “I mean he was someone I competed against. He was a great colleague, but I think more importantly he was a friend to pretty much anyone he came across.”

When Hisner left the program, Whitko Athletic Director Josh Mohr hired Fisher to take his place.

“He loved the kids number one, and loved the program,” said Mohr. “He would do anything to help the program or anything here at  Whitko Athletics. He was a very valued member of our Whitko family and coaching staff, but most importantly his impact on his players was tremendous.”

No cause of death has been released at this time. Out of respect for the family, Whitko High School has not announced a  timeline to find a new head baseball coac.h
