The 2018 high school football season kicks off on Friday and that means your first Highlight Zone “Game of the Week” as Wayne travels to Zollner Stadium to face Bishop Dwenger.
In a game that is expected to have SAC title race implications, the Generals and Saints met twice last season.
In week one of 2017 Bishop Dwenger beat Wayne 27-12. The Saints later topped the Generals 41-20 in the sectional championship game as Dwenger advanced all the way to 4A semi-state.
After 15 season under Chris Svarczkopf, the Saints have a new leader. Jason Garrett, a Dwenger alum and assistant for six seasons, now takes over the helm for the Saints. He’ll rely on 6-foot-6, 308-pound Wisconsin recruit Joe Tippmann to lead his team in the trenches.
Wayne has been building for this season since Derrick Moore took over four years ago. After going winless in 2015, the Generals won 3 games in 2016 and 5 in 2017. They’ll look to take the next step in 2018 behind Ohio State-bound senior Craig Young.
Kick is set for 7 p.m. Friday. WANE’s Andy McDonnell will be live at 6 p.m. to preview the game, then tune into the Highlight Zone for the area’s most-watched and longest-running sports show at 11 p.m. for the area’s best coverage.
