FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – After months of push back from parents, the Northwest Allen County Schools (NACS) School Board has made a motion to make masks optional starting July 1.
At Monday evening’s meeting, Steve Bartkus made motion to change the school’s plans and School Board President Kent Somers seconded the motion, according to Lizette Downey, Chief Communications Officer for NACS.
The motion would make mask wearing optional. In the next meeting on June 28 the board will vote.
This motion comes after months of pushback from parents who say mask should be optional and “it should be up to the parents whether they wear a mask or not.”
“Of course we want to be masked optional. We want to get everything back to normal,” said Dr. Chris Himsel, NACS superintendent. “But, we’re going to do so when the Department of Health, the CDC and others informed us that we’re far enough along that we can do that without putting our most vulnerable students at risk.”
Due to some confusion, a previous version of this story indicated that the school board had voted to make mask wearing optional. The article has since been corrected.
