Thanks in part to 35 trips to the free throw line, Purdue Fort Wayne men’s basketball picked up a 72-68 victory over South Carolina State on Tuesday (Nov. 20) evening at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
SCSU matched their largest lead of the game at 49-42 with 11:42 left in the game following six consecutive points. The seven-point margin didn’t last long as six straight points by the Mastodons followed.
Later in the game the Mastodons used a 10-0 run, capped by a Kason Harrell 3-pointer, to grab a 59-53 lead with 6:00 left. The run forced an SCSU timeout. It wouldn’t be the last of the Bulldogs. 2:42 was on the clock when Damni Applewhite chased down an offensive rebound and finished inside to put SCSU up 62-61. But it would end up being SCSU’s final lead of the game.
The next possession saw John Konchar pick up an offensive rebound and get fouled in the process. His two free throws made it a 63-62 game. Harrell had a block on the other end and then a jumper in the paint seconds later to put the ‘Dons up 65-62. Matt Holba followed with a 3-pointer on the Mastodons’ next possession to all but clinch the game at 68-62 with 1:21 left.
Konchar recorded two steals to move his career total to (214) and take second all-time in program history. He passed DeAngelo Woodall’s 213 steals from 1999-03.
Konchar added 18 points and nine rebounds. Holba totaled a career-high 18 points thanks to a 4-of-6 night from beyond the arc.
Harrell had 10 points and a career-high four blocks.
The ‘Dons finished 19-of-35 from the free throw line. South Carolina State was 13-of-17 from the stripe.
South Carolina State falls to 1-5. Purdue Fort Wayne is 3-3. The ‘Dons return to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum on Friday (Nov. 23) to host Samford.
