Fort Wayne SB Closes Out Regular Season With Victory on Senior Day

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne softball team sent its five seniors out in style as the Mastodons won its regular season finale 8-5 over Omaha. Prior to the game the team honored its seniors Jenna Balthazor, Bailey Benefiel, Demitra Burns, Amber Davis and Courtney Holm.

 

Lauren Watson and Brooke Imel led the ‘Dons going 2-for-3 at the plate. Watson led the team with two RBIs, while Imel led the way with two runs scored and driving in another. Maria Palmegiani and Morganne Denny each had a home run.

 

Omaha scored two runs in the top of the second, but the Mastodons answered back in the bottom half. Palmegiani led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, her fifth of the season. One pitch later, Morganne Denny drilled one off the right field foul pole for her sixth round-tripper of the year. Fort Wayne wasn’t done yet. Balthazor was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a throwing error by the UNO catcher. Following a pair of singles, Watson reached on an infield single, allowing Imel to score. The final run of the inning came when Lacey Wilzbacher scored on a wild pitch.

 

Fort Wayne added to its lead in the fourth. After a pair of Maverick errors to start the inning, Imel brought home Davis with a single to right. Watson brought in Holm when she singled to left. The Mastodon’s final run came when Watson stole second and the errant throw by the Omaha catcher allowed Imel to score from third.

 

The Mavs scored three runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of home runs, but they would get no further.

 

Benefiel picked up the win in her final appearance on the Fort Wayne softball field. She threw four innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and three strikeouts. Shaina Eyre came on to pick up her second save of the season. Eyre threw the final three innings without allowing a run and only one hit.

 

The Mastodons now prepare for the Summit League Championship May 9-12, where they await an opponent to still be determined.
