FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A 26-year-old man died after drowning in a small man-made swimming pond early Sunday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the 3900 block of East Sherwood Terrace around midnight.
Fort Wayne police said the man was likely intoxicated from drinking at a party. The man then climbed over a neighbor's fence and jumped into the pond. Police said the man was unable to get out.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department Water Rescue Team pulled the man from the water. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but later died, according to a statement from DNR officials.
The Allen County Coroner's Office on Thursday identified the man as Dewayne L. Sanders of Fort Wayne. An autopsy showed Sanders died of asphyxia due to drowning and his death was ruled an accident, the coroner's office said.
Indiana Conservation Officers are working the investigation.
